285. “My Mother the Dog”

April 25, 2011

Q: Does anyone remember a story titled something like “My Mother the Dog”? Probably from the late ’70s.

A: It was “A Dog Tale”, by John Hughes, from the March 1980 (Miscellany) issue. (Thanks to Dell for the answer.)

Kimmy brought up an interesting point. "We can't call Mom "Mom' when we're outside or when people are over," she said. "Well," Dad said, stroking his chin. "Let's give her a dog name. How about if we call her Brownie? She's brown." Mom growled. She didn't like that name. ("A Dog Tale" by John Hughes, "March Miscellany" issue, 1980)
