387. Horror-Comedy Short Story

April 30, 2024

Q. I’m the publisher of Weird Tales (WeirdTales.com), and am on the hunt for a strange horror-comedy short story that I read in National Lampoon as a kid in the 80’s. This story starts off with a line like this: “When the blade went through my neck and my head fell into the basket, I knew I had only moments to act.” Then the guy jams his tongue through his stump and bounces around, creating havoc. Any ideas?

A. That would be “Tough Scrape: A Nick Skorpio Adventure” by Joseph Ireland and David Garrett from the October 1994 (“Attack of the 5’2″ Women”) issue. (Thanks to Fred for answering in the comments.)

Comments

"The blade of the guillotine cut cleanly through the back of my shaven neck, and immediately I felt the pull of gravity tugging my head forward. Below me, a bloody wicker basket, filled with the unsmiling faces of those previously fallen. Indeed, I was in a tough" If this is the one, you are looking for October 1994.
