59. Strawberry Cheesecake

November 10, 2003

Q: I am trying to find the centerfold of an issue that as published sometime between May and December 1982. It featured a Strawberry Shortcake and a Smurf. At this point, I would be happy to know which issue it was in. Any ideas?

A: It was “Smurfery Rhymes” by Sean Kelly and Rick Meyerowitz in the September 1982 (Hot Sex) issue.

Comments

Yes! That centerfold was hysterical. I'd love to find that myself.

I nearly died laughing over that one--it was titled 'Strawberry Cheesecake" and I believe the issue was the one that showed a knight coming home and finding his lady in bed with the dragon...

Just in case the concept wasn't offensive enough on its own merits, Rick saw fit to draw the Smurf with unmistakeable African features (these were the 80s, interracial dating was still Movie of the Week material). Considering the crap Gabe and Tycho went through over "American McGee's Strawberry Shortcake," this should have given American Greetings a heart attack.

Yeah, this chick I didn't even know came up to me (I was wearing my karate gi at the time, she must have thought it was hot), and showed me that centerfold of the Smurf doggying Shortcake, and told me to keep the whole magazine (the Hot Sex issue, remember). I knew how to take a hint, so I told her to write her phone number on it. Good times. Anyway, I found a scan online. Just do a Google image search for Smurfery Rhymes.
